Alf Jordan and Miklos Pinther Named Lifetime Members
The CartoPhilatelic Society is pleased to announce that Dr. Alf Jordan and Mr. Miklos Pinther have been named Lifetime Members of the Society in recognition of their long and meritorious service and contributions to the Society. Dr. Jordan and Mr. Pinther are the first Society members to be so honored.
Alf Jordan was a medical doctor and had an ongoing interest in maps and map stamps. When Alf learned, by way of fellow collector Bill Critzer, that the cartophilatelic group had become inactive for a couple of years, Alf became interested in trying to restart the Society. Under Alf's leadership former members, including former secretary/treasurer Lillian Kent who "maintained" the Society during the period of dormancy, were contacted; new officers recruited; and the Society became active again with the publication of the first issue The New CartoPhilatelist, in March 2003.
Alf served as President of the Society until 2004, then as Secretary/Treasurer until his "retirement" earlier this year. Without doubt, the CartoPhilatelic Society would not exist today were it not for the efforts of Alf.
Miklos Pinther was professionally involved with maps and cartography. While working at the American Geographical Society (AGS) Miklos became interested in collecting map stamps from fellow colleague and mentor Wilfrid Webster, who was a founder of The CartoPhilatelic Society. At the urging from Mark Larkin, a former editor of The Carto-Philatelist, Miklos held the position of Society President and Publisher of The Carto-Philatelist, from 1986 to 1995. Since 2003 Miklos has been President Emeritus, and is a frequent contributor to The New Carto-Philatelist. He also was editor of the Society's successful book, "America on the Map (2007)."
Read more about the contributions from Alf and Miklos and background about their interest in cartophilately in the Society's press release.
The Society and its members have benefited greatly from the dedicated work of Alf and Miklos. Please join in congratulating them for their contributions to the Society and cartophilately.

Dues Reminder for all Members
Society Treasurer Ed Vallery reminds all members that the October 2011 issue (#35) of The New CartoPhilatelist will be the last issue sent to members that have outstanding dues.
Members who have outstanding dues on November 1, 2011 will receive a letter from the Society informing them that they will no longer be active members and will be removed from the Society's membership list.
Over the summer, both our Secretary, Marybeth Sulkowski, and Treasurer, Ed Vallery, have been contacting in active members and many of you have renewed and are still interested in being part of the CartoPhilatelic Society.
We encourage those members who may have not renewed their membership to hopefully reconsider and continue to support the Society. Please contact Ed Vallery with your renewals or if you have a question about your current membership.
We thank you for your continued support.

Dispatch of TNCP #35
In mid-October, our Editor, Martin Oakes, will dispatch the print version of TNCP #35 to the our hardcopy members. By the time you read this, a download link for the digital issue of TNCP #35 should already be waiting in an email for our digital members.
For those members subscribing to the hardcopy version, please remember you can also download the digital version from TNCP Member's Archive.
Those of you receiving the digital version of the newsletter know that we have had some difficulty making sure that all of you receive the email with the download link. In the dispatch email Martin had requested a confirmation that you have received the email and successfully downloaded TNCP #35. If you have not sent that confirmation back to Martin, or if you have not received the email for TNCP #35 please contact Martin Oakes as soon as possible. We appreciate your assistance.
If you have not received an email from the Society for either #34 or #35 you may want to check the spam folder of your email program. Some email programs will flag messages with links and route them to the spam folder. Be sure to add Martin's email address to your "safe addresses" list so future messages will be filtered properly.

Submissions Deadline for TNCP #36
Just a quick, but important reminder that our Editor, Martin Oakes, has chosen December 10, 2011 as the deadline for submissions to The New CartoPhilatelist.
The date for publication will be in early January 2012. Those of you interested in submitting an article should contact our Editor, Martin Oakes prior to submission.
Martin has said that material and articles for Issue #36 are required and mentioned, "The hardest part about being an editor is having enough good articles of varying length to fill the pages. Please write about your favorite map stamps and tell us why they are important to you."
Issues 34 & 35 contained a translated article that was first published in French, in another philatelic journal. As the Society is international in scope, we have various members that can sometimes volunteer translation resources. For those of you that have non-english articles and would like to see them translated and published in The New CartoPhilatelist please contact our Editor Martin Oakes.
Finish out the year in style by writing an article for
The New CartoPhilatelist!

Martin Oakes Wins Silver Medal for Comprehensive Maps Exhibit
 |
| Martin Oakes, Silver Medal, ATA-NTSS 2011-06 |
A new exhibit by Society journal editor Martin Oakes, entitled "Have You Read a Map Lately?" received a Silver Medal at the National Topical Stamp Show (NTSS) held in Milwaukee, WI, USA in late June. The NTSS is the large annual meeting of the American Topical Association (ATA) and featured many exhibits and dealers. Martin's exhibit also received the Women Exhibitors Medal given to the exhibit that has the highest potential to develop into a gold medal winner. Martin's exhibit contained 160 pages spread across 10 frames. The comprehensive exhibit covered the entire range of maps on stamps from latitude and longitude to map projections to maps featuring explorers and exploration. Martin will make some scans of his exhibit and a link will be available in the near future.
[ Congratulations Martin! Next time we hear about this, you will have won a gold medal! This is also a good opportunity to encourage other members who may have exhibited in the past and would like to show scans of their exhibits online. The Society can provide online storage for scans of the exhibit. Please contact Martin or the web admin if you are interested in showing an exhibit on the Society's web site. --web admin ] |

Atlas of Vatican Cartophilately Series
In recent issues of Vatican Notes, the official journal of the Vatican Philatelic Society, there have been two in-depth articles on Vatican CartoPhilately. The articles, are written by James Hamilton, a member of the Vatican Philatelic Society and also a new member of our Society. James is also an Arago volunteer who has written numerous articles on Vatican City philately. In a recent interview on the Arago web site, James recalls his childhood interest in stamps and how he "quickly became interested in stamps from Europe and used an atlas to locate the issuing countries, thereby learning geography as well." A similar view, perhaps held by many fellow cartophilatelists. Later in the interview, James mentions that Arago's online exhibit of "Allan Lee's Maps on Stamps Volume 6 was spectacular." Jame's article "Atlas of Vatican City Carto-philately" is divided into three parts. Part one considers maps on stamps or postal cards of the world Europe and Italy. Part two looks at maps of the Western Hemisphere, Africa the Near and Far East. Part Three considers topographical maps, historical travels on maps and outlines of continents or count ires on stamps. Part one was published in Second Quarter 2011, Vol. 59, No. 348, and Part two in Third Quarter 2011, Vol. 59, No. 349 of Vatican Notes. We will have an update once the third part in the series has been published.

[ there were some comments on the New Issues blog about how some of the 2011 Europa stamps were not correctly depicting a map of EU members. Perhaps there is more information on the Post Europ site If any of our European members or Europa collectors can provide more information, please contact the web admin. ]

Isle of Samson UK Cinderella Issue
April 2011 |
Samson, a wildlife trust and largest island in the Isles of Scilly group, is located off the southwestern tip of the Cornish peninsula of Great Britain. In April 2011 with the help of local children's author Peter Yorke, a set of four stamps were issued depicting a map of the Isle of Samson spread across a block of four, 10p stamps. As the island is a wildlife trust and is uninhabited there is no local post office, and no local carriage of mail from the island to the mainland. The wildlife trust liked Peter's idea to create a cinderella issue that would help gain some exposure for the islands and the wildlife trust. Peter is also an active member of the Cinderella Stamp Forum. The Samson Isle stamps can be purchased directly from Peter's web site, http://www.fidgetyforest.com/page7.html
